What We Do

Who We Are directs What We Do

As Religious Brothers in the spirit of St. Francis, we strive to imitate the way Jesus lived His life in the original spirit of the Gospel in our own day. This is conducted by following a three-fold way of life:

  •

  • Prayer

First, we devote ourselves to faithfully praying the Holy Mass daily and the Liturgy of the Hours, aka the Divine Office. This involves praying the canonical hours of the Church. Of the seven in total, we pray four: the Morning, Midday, Evening (with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament), and Night Prayer. Receiving the Love of God in prayer, we are then able to love each other more fully in communal life as well as exercise our apostolic duties in a greater way.

  • Brotherhood

Second, we are enriched by our life in Community. As Christ’s mission for us was to reveal the Father’s love, so too must we abide in that love and share it with one another as members of Christ’s body. One of the primary callings of a Religious Brother is to get your Brothers to Heaven! As we grow in fraternal love and charity with each other, we may then also radiate that love to those we encounter. One of the primary ways we live out our call to fraternity is by having daily meals together in the evening.

  • Service

Third, our service becomes elevated through the fruits of our prayers and desires to grow in holiness through communal living. Among those we serve who are in need, we focus fundamentally on the poor and homeless as St. Francis did, but also those who have suffered undignified attacks on the human person. Inspired by the Gospel of Life Charism, our service involves many apostolates. See more at the link to Service (aka, Apostolates).

    Service

Here's how the traditional Works of Mercy guide our dignity-building apostolate:

    • To feed the hungry we have a weekly food shelf that offers food, hygiene, and intercessory prayer.

    • To shelter the homeless we house international victims of torture and sponsor a boarding school in Myanmar.

    • To visit the sick and care for the dying we once operated an AIDS hospice; today we visit scores of veterans at the VA Hospital three days a week.

    • To clothe the naked we operate a busy baby diaper closet and a winter clothing drive.

    • To instruct the unlearned we teach Religion classes at St Jerome Catholic School and Catechism Classes for the Myanmar refugee community.

    • To counsel the doubtful, we pray and sidewalk counsel to mothers and fathers who are tempted to have an abortion.

    • To pray for the living and the dead and spread devotion to Our Lady Queen of Peace, we have a Rosary-making ministry called Regina Pacis. We also spread peace and prayers in our local streets.

    • To comfort the sorrowful we joined the Clergy March after George Floyd's death, visited the site, and continue to journey closely with many dear friends who have suffered racial prejudice and violence over the years.

And still there's so much more to be done... Lord, make us instruments of your Peace! Help us rebuild souls for Your Kingdom!
